Africa - CAF Elections: President Jacob Zuma Backs Issa Hayatou As COSAFA Endorses Ahmad

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has said incumbent president; Issa Hayatou has received the support of South African President, Jacob Zuma ahead of the football body’s elections.

The support was expressed on the morning of Saturday February 18, 2017, during an audience the South African leader granted the incumbent president of the Confederation of African Football at his residence in Pretoria, CAF said in a release.

The statement said president Zuma assured his host of South Africa's “flawless support” for his candidacy for a new term at the helm of the CAF.

It said South African, Minister of Sport and Recretaion, Fikile Mbalula, South African Football Association president, Danny Jordaan, and Mamelodi Sundowns president, Patrice Motsepe, were all present at the meeting.

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, winners of the CAF Champions League last year were due to host TP Mazembe of DR Congo, winners of the CAF Confederation Cup 2016, later on Saturday.

The support comes a week after the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) said it has endorsed Madagascar's FA president, Ahmad Ahmad as candidate for the continental soccer body presidency.

The elections have been slated for March in Addis Ababa.

Cameroon’s Issa Hayatou is seeking an eight mandate at the helm of the African soccer body which he has managed since 1998.
