While on an inspection visit to the Bamenda Central Prison in the North West Region of Cameroon Saturday February 9, 2013, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice in charge of Penitentiary Administration, urged inmates to learn a trade. Doh Jerome Penbaga told the prisoners that the call to learn a trade and be law abiding is for their eventual social re-insertion at the time their prison sentence terminates. In a bid to boost the moral of the inmates, Mr. Doh donated some sports equipment and food items to the prisoners in prelude to the National Youth Day due to be celebrated next Monday February 11, 2013. The Penitentiary boss equally congratulated the inmates for scoring a 100% in last year’s First School Leaving Certificate Examination while telling them that the prison is not supposed to be their home as young Cameroonians. The prison’s spokesperson used the occasion to appeal that their meal be paired up to twice per day while the Bamenda Central Prison Superintendent said there is need for the staff strength to be step up. As usual, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice in charge of Penitentiary Administration assured them, that their demands have been well noted and that there are plans to improve on the country’s Penitentiary Administration as well as the living conditions of prisoners.
