Cameroon - 2018 GCE: Gunmen Disrupt Exams In Muyuka On Day One

There was total pandemonium in Government Bilingual High School, Muyuka Subdivision; Fako Division in the South West region after unknown gunmen stormed the school shooting indiscriminately.

The men arrived when students were taking on the Advance Level Economics but were forced to stop and run to different directions after gun shots were fired in the air.

The main aim of the visit by armed men was to disrupt the process and scare everyone to go home. Prior to the start of exams this year, two Principals have been abducted in Mile 16 and Muyuka in less than 24 hours. Enanga Sanga and Ngomba Eric of GHS Mile 16 Bolifamba and Cameroon Baptist Academy were taken to unknown destinations.

In other Anglophone areas like Buea, Bamenda, Kumbo, Kumba among others, a relative calm was observed but the students wrote under tight security. In Bamenda, chief town of the North West region, Journalists were not allowed to the various examination halls as they were kept in a distance by administrators.

This year, some 129,700 candidates are sitting in for the General Certificate of Education Examinations, but 5000 less than the number last year.

Some 388 accommodation centers have been set aside for the exams which will be in 8 phases, meanwhile a total of 295 out of 388 centers are destined for Ordinary Level, with 81 centers in the North West region and 48 in the South West region.

In Douala, the number of candidates especially at the Bonaberie Center have increased, Chief of Center, Gimndo Gilbert told reporters that they have registered more than 1600 candidates with majority frm the two English speaking regions due to continues violence.
