Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration Atanga Nji Paul, Chairman of the National Hadj Commission has handed a consignment of materials to each of the 2,839 pilgrims travelling to the Holy City of Mecca this year.

The materials essential for their pilgrimage is an offer from the Head of State, President Paul Biya and comprises the dress worn for prayers, a pair of shoes, a waist bag for personal effect and five litres of holy water were handed over to the representatives of the pilgrims Tuesday, July 23, 2019 during a ceremony chaired by Minister Atanga Nji.

“After having given FCFA 1 billion two months ago to help all the pilgrims, the Head of State His Excellency President Paul Biya decided to give them materials that they will use during the prayer sessions,” said Minister Atanga Nji, “So, for the Muslims, you have the ihram which is the white cloth that you use to go and pray. Then you have a small bag to put in your Quran, your money, dress and anything which will accompany you. Not only did the president give them the financial assistance. He has also accompanied them.”

The chairman of the national hajj commission added that: “The ihram is something which is very important in the life of a Muslim. All the imams and traditional leaders who have gone to mecca tell you that on the day that they will die, they should be buried with that because it means that they have lived a spiritual life. That is why they keep that white garment.

“It is something that is very important and I think that the Head of State, what he is doing with the pilgrims and with the catholic church, the protestants or the Baptist churches is that there is the spiritual dimension which is very important in the life of President Paul Biya because that spiritual dimension is necessary for a leader to rule. So, it is very very important. That is what you see him do to the Muslims; he does same to the Christians and all other religious communities in Cameroon.”

The ceremony was attended by dozens of pilgrims, guides and representatives from across the country. They were all appreciative of efforts employed by the Head of State, President Paul Biya to ensure that they undertake a hitch free pilgrimage.

The permanent secretary of the Islamic and Cultural Association of Cameroon, Professor Prof. Souley Mama is grateful for. “We will like to extend our gratitude and our thanks to the Head of State. And I will like to remind that last year; he offered three suitcases to every pilgrim and five litres of Zamzam. And this year also, he did a donation of FCFA 1 billion. The Muslim community and the organisation of pilgrims thank President Biya very much. The Muslim community stands with President Paul Biya.”

Minister Atanga Nji Paul reiterated the Head of State's concern for a hitch-free pilgrimage for Cameroonian Muslims. He said the government booked hotels just walking distances to the praying grounds and has also secured good flights for them. The first group of pilgrims leave Cameroon on July 29, 2019 and it will take four days to transport all the pilgrims.
