Separatists in Maryland, United States have raised at least 500 dollars on Sunday, October 13, as part of an effort to assist detained muslim scholar and activist, Abdul Karim.

According to one of the organisers Eric Tataw, the sum was gathered and handed over to a contributor, who will in turn transfer the money to Karim, through the Ayah Foundation or his lawyers.

Lawyers say that his arrest was unlawful and filed a habeas corpus request to the Yaoundé High Court. His lawyers were denied access to meet him for five days. It was only on the 30th of September that lawyers knew his whereabout, as he was taken to the Yaounde Military court and charged with acts of terrorism, financing terrorism and secession.

Karim was arrested on September 25, infront of the Swiss Embassy in Yaounde, two days after he went on Equinox TV in Douala, and blasted the Major National Dialogue, saying it was more of a government show than genuine interest to solve the crisis.

The Major National Dialogue took place between 30th September to 4th October, aimed at bringing lasting peace to Cameroon, especially in the North West and South West regions. He has been critical of government's management of the ongoing unrest in the country, and called for an open-ended dialogue.

Several international rights groups have been calling for his release. In a latest report published by Human Rights Watch, the group called for his immediate release and other Anglophone detainees still held up by the government.

“The release of Kamto and other prisoners does not demonstrate that Cameroon is turning a new leaf because unlawful arrests continue..The government should demonstrate that meaningful change has come by ending unlawful arrests, incommunicado detention, and torture and by respecting the rule of law.”, said HRW
