Ekema Patrick Esunge, Mayor of the Buea Council in Cameroon’s troubled South West Region has fired a last warning to all economic operators who continue to respect calls to disobedience and ghost town made by armed men and activists fighting for the “independence” of a country they call Ambazonia.

In a correspondence dated July 12, 2019 and captioned “Last Warning”, Ekema writes to all business operators at the Mile 17 Motor Park, Owners of Semi-permanent structures, owners of call boxes and hawkers among others expressing his indignation at their disobedience.

“Despite several appeals to you not to heed to calls for ghost town from unknown persons, you have persistently kept your business premises closed on Mondays in the name of respecting ghost town,” Ekema opens his missive.

Last July 8, 2019, Mayor Ekema, council workers and security forces sealed all shops and business establishments that closed their doors in ‘respect’ of ghost town calls from separatists who seek a breakaway state from the Republic of Cameroon.

Many business premises were sealed from the Mile 17 Motor Park through Molyko to Bonduma under the supervision of the municipality’s Chief Executive Officer and security officers.

Like it was the case last April, not even mobile telephony agencies, e-money kiosks, banks, money transfer shops were spared when the mayor's squad made Monday's unannounced outing.

The shops have since remained sealed, but in what may be characteristic of Ekema’s benevolence, he has now asked that all shops be opened on Monday or their owners be evicted and the shops given to those who are willing to respect state authorities.

Ekema writes: “We are by this letter giving you the last chance to open your business ventures on Mondays and to go about your normal activities like on all other days. If we find your business premises not operational on Mondays in the name of observing the so-called ghost town, you shall be evicted without further notice and your business premises handed over to someone else who will be willing to respect instruction from the state or municipal authorities. Please treat this as a matter of extreme importance.”
