It was a full park at most agencies in Bonaberi, Douala on Tuesday night, as some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), were heading back to their town of origin, Bamenda, after reports of relative calm following recent decision taken by the Governor, uplifting the long curfew.

Some of the who talked to Camerooninfo.net, said they had been following up developments from Bamenda, while in Douala and have confirmed that life is gradually returning to normal. Others affirm that with the latest decision, uplifting the curfew, things have changed and the town is not as hostile as before, reasons why they were heading back to continue their businesses.

“ It is too expensive to stay in Douala. The money that I used to prepare food for two days, I now use in cooking for a day in Douala. Sometimes my children complain that they are not even full. I have bananas and plantains in my farm. My sister planted corn in my farm. At least I have enough food in Bamenda”, said one of the returnees, Ousman Yeika.

Questioned on how certain he was that things were normal, he said, “ We will see. But right now, everybody is going. The heat here is too much. I just want to go back home for now. If finally it doesn’t work, I will be forced to return”. This feeling was shared by many others heading to Bamenda on Tuesday, and who refused to be recorded for personal reasons.

The Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele Lafrique lifted a curfew that was imposed on the region since 9th September 2018. The third curfew that limited the movement of people and goods within the region from 6am to 6pm was lifted on Friday, 14th June 2019.

The Governor’s decision was taken following relative calm that had returned to the region that had been battling secessionist fighters. However, secessionist fighters are said to have imposed their own rule on the ground, warning business operators to shut down by 8pm.
