Cameroon’s Minister of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo has ordered a probe into torture of a suspected Separatist fighter by some Gendarmes in the South West region recently.

In a release signed Tuesday May 15, 2018, Mr Assomo said Gendarmes arrested a certain Tsobonyl Alphones Tatia also known as “Title man” and “General”, who is reported to have terrorized the entire population of Nkongle, in the South West region and has also been killing Gendarme.

They tied and tortured him by using machetes to beat him up mercilessly. He said by doing so, the men in uniform took the laws into their hands, contrary to training they received.

The Minister of Defense has promised that investigations when completed, culprits will have to face the law.

He has called on the people of affected region to collaborate with the Forces of law and Order to eradicate terrorism.

Joseph Beti Assomo did not however mention repeated cases of torture, burning of houses and massive killings by men in uniform in ongoing Anglophone crisis.

On several occasions like the case of Azi in Lebialem division in the South West region, the military have been caught on video setting houses ablaze, shooting and killing innocent citizens but these have never caught the attention of the Minister.

Late 2017, several students of the University of Buea were brutalized, some raped and some arrested and the public cried foul, instead Communication Minister said the Military acted in a professional manner.

These military excesses seem to have instead radicalized the population as even kids as young as 12 years have carried arms against the military (evidence in a recent video released by Separatist fighters)
