Two gendarmes, one police officer, and one civilian were reportedly killed in the wee hours of Friday, January 8, 2021, when suspected armed separatists attacked a security checkpoint along the Babadjou-Matazem highway.

Babadjou is in the West Region of Cameroon while Matazem is in the North West Region.

Provisional reports say a gendarme officer serving at the Mbouda Gendarmerie Company was injured along with a civilian, an assistant truck driver.

Open sources say the state forces killed in the attack include a gendarme officer serving at the Mbouda Gendarmerie Company, a police inspector serving at the Mbouda Police Station, and a gendarme serving at the Babadjou gendarmerie brigade.

The lone civilian who died is said to be a truck driver whose assistant was injured.

Those familiar with the incident say bullets perforated the truck and other vehicles that were around the scene of the attack.

Friday’s attack comes two days after an improvised explosive device reportedly planted by separatist fighters in Momo, North West Region detonated, killing five persons, including four soldiers and the Momo Divisional Delegate for Communication, Mrs. Liwusi Rebecca Jeme.

Another Improvised Explosive Device was diffused by state forces in Kumba on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Navy Captain Atonfack Guemo Cyrille Serge, Head of the Communication Division at the Ministry of Defense said a soldier sustained severe bullet wounds in an attack on New Year’s Eve. An operation by security officers the next day led to the death of two persons – Kum Bah Gilbert alias Lion and Ngong Godlove. Authorities said those killed were members of a “gang”.

Cameroon’s state forces have been battling to dislodge armed separatists who pitched their tents in the North West and South West Regions since Anglophone protests transformed into an armed conflict in 2017.

Corporate demands by Common Law Lawyers and Anglophone Teachers led to protests in November 2016. The street demonstrations later morphed into ongoing running gun battles between state forces and armed separatist fighters in the predominantly English-speaking regions, leading to untold destruction of human lives, their habitats, and livelihoods.

Tit-for-tat killings, kidnappings, arsons, maiming, and outright terror have become part of daily lives in some parts of the English-speaking regions.
