Common Law Lawyers in Cameroon have vouched to resist a a bill on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon to their last blood.

Their sentimentswere expressed in a memo, addresses to the speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguié Djibril as they termed it an attempt by government to assimilate Anglophones.

"Take Notice that, we the Common Law Lawyers and indeed the entire Anglophone people, will resist the bill on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon, to the last drop of our blood", it read.

Reports say the bill will be presented on Tuesday, during a plenary sitting of the National Assembly which begins at 10am.

Lawyers have expressed concerns over Articles 19 and 26 of the bill. The earlier article states that official correspondence between public entities shall be written in either of the official languages.

Meanwhile Article 26 says either English or French shall be used before the ordinary law abs special courts. Subsection 2 of the same article states that court decisions shall be rendered in either of the two official languages.

To them, the bill was poorly drafted and has bad faith to terminate the common law system which they say will bring untold suffering to the population.

They regret that the bill will legitimise the effective use of French language in English speaking regions.
