There have been a series of blackouts in some neighbourhoods around Bertoua, Bamenda and Douala in the East, North West and Littoral regions respectively, following frequent and prolonged and unexpected power outages.

Denizens have been expressing concerns over constant power outages, which some say it can go for over a month, without any explanations and excuses from the national electricity supply company, ENEO.

Some have declared that their electrical appliances have been destroyed. They expressed regrets over the fact that food stored in refrigerators have been destroyed on several occasions while others complain of increased insecurity due to constant and prolonged blackouts.

It is as a result of the later that hundreds of commercial riders staged a protest on Friday July 12, in Bertoua, where they blocked roads for hours, preventing traffic.

The bike riders extended their protest to the premises of the East regional governor, where they accused ENEO for frequent power outages, especially at night which remains a peak period for their businesses. These frequent blackouts according to them has created a perfect breeding ground for bandits.

As a result, some have lost their motorbikes while others have been murdered. Reports say five commercial bike riders have been killed within the short space of time due to insecurity.

However, the Divisional Officer for Bertoua I , Max Edjenguele Mbella, calmed down the protesting bike riders, telling them he would channel their problems to hierarchy, who will seek solutions to them.

The situation is alarming in some neighbourhoods in Bamenda and Douala, which have gone for more than a week without light. Families have been finding it difficult to connect with their loved ones, especially in Bamenda, which is currently going through a sociopolitical unrest. The situation is worse in some villages most hit by the crisis.
