The Circle of Friends of Cameroon (CERAC), a charity association created by First Lady Chantal Biya has carried out a series of humanitarian activities in Cameroon in the past days, one of them being, giving support to sickle cell patients.

A delegation from CERAC recently visited patients suffering from sickle cell at her Foundation, that bear her name. This was in line with activities marking World Sickle Cell Day celebrated every June 19, as they offered gifts to the Sickle Cell Unit of the Mother and Child Centre of the Chantal Biya Foundation.

The unit that exists since 2008, provides different types of assistance to children and adults with sickle cell. According to the head of the unit, Dr. Aminatou, the gifts will enable better care for patients at the unit who are constantly on medication from health complications caused by the disease.

The Secretary General of CERAC, Mrs. Aissa Motaze led the CERAC delegation, who used the opportunity to know more about Sickle Cell disease, as well as seek ways on how to intensify sensitisation around the disease which is preventable

In same direction, the CERAC women recently offered gifts such to Internally Displaced Persons in Yaoundé. This is one amongst the many efforts carried out by Chantal Biya in the fields of health and most importantly, education.

Health experts say 20-30 percent of Cameroonians are suffering from sickle cell, one out of 14 couples are at risk of the disease with some 6,050 children born each year with sickle cell in Cameroon. At the Chantal Biya Foundation, some 700 children suffering from sickle cell, carry out medical checkups and receive medications.
