Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor alias Agbor Balla, Vice President of the African Bar Association (AfBA) in charge of Central Africa has said the sentencing of Sisiku Ayuk Tabe Julius and nine others violates the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.
The Member of the Executive Council of the African Bar took to Facebook Tuesday, August 20, 2019 shortly after the Yaounde Military Court handed a life sentence to each of the 10 suspects arrested January 5, 2018 in Nigeria and standing trial against the People of Cameroon.
Agbor Balla, President of the outlawed Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC) said when the Yaounde Military Court slammed a life sentence on Sisiku and Co., it was an affront to due process and the rule of law.
The President/Founder of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa reacted thus: "The sentencing of Sisiku and Co. to life imprisonment is an affront to due process and the rule of law. The right to fair trial is a fundamental human right."
The erstwhile President of the Fako Lawyers Association (FAKLA) said the night-long trial of the 10 is a kaleidoscopic representation of how Cameroon is managed.
"The sham process is a reflection of the sham management of the Country," said the celebrated Human Rights Lawyer.
Cameroon-info.net recalls that Julius Ayuk Tabe, Cornelius Kwanga, Dr Egbe Orock, Barrister Eyambe Ebai, Dr. Fidelis Nde Che, Dr. Kimeng Henry, Dr. Nfor Ngala Nfor, Prof. Augustine Awasum, Barrister Shufai Blaise and Tassang Wilfred were standing trial against the People of Cameroon on charges of secession, terrorism, hostility against the state of Cameroon, revolution and the non-possession of their identity cards among other charges.
Defense lawyers say their clients were each sentenced to life jail and will jointly pay FCFA 250 billion to the civil party and the state as well as jointly pay FCFA 12 billion as cost of the trial or serve an additional five years each.
Shortly after the verdict was handed down Tuesday morning, a message attributable to Barrister Amungwa Tanyi Nicodemous, Media and Communication Chairman of the Defense Team of Sisiku Ayuk Julius Tabe and others said:
“Let the entire world be informed that at exactly 5:38am this Tuesday the 20th day of August 2019, the President of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia and the nine (9) others have been slammed the life sentence by the Yaounde Military Tribunal in gross violation of their rights as accused persons.”
Those convicted were arrested in Nigeria on January 5, 2018 in connection to the socio-political upheavals in Cameroon’s North West and South West Regions. They were later extradited to Cameroon.
