The National Union of Air Transport Workers has announced a strike action at Cameroon's defunct air company, CAMAIR-Co, on the 2nd of May 2019.

In a notice to the General Manager signed on Wednesday 24th April, these workers declared that they would go on strike eight days later, if within the period indicated, the management fails to upgrade their working conditions, they would begin strike at 6 am.

"We, Air Transport Union of Workers, represented at CAMAIR-Co, hereby commit ourselves, after this notice, within the period indicated above that in the absence of actions and strong decisions, we would manifest our disapproval by an agreed strike action on 02 May 2019 at 06 am”, the notice read.

These workers want the company to pay three months of salary arrears owed them, rehabilitate the company fleet, payment of health and social insurance, amongst other grievances. They condemned the impoverishment of workers who have not been paid for the months of February, March and the current month of April, thereby asking management to pay these salaries before May 2.

Apart from salary arrears, these workers lamented over poor safety and security measures at the place of work, where the moral, mental and psychological capacities of the personnel are affected by the precariousness and uncertainties of tomorrow. To them, the company has shown no sign it has a vision or definite projects for the benefit of workers.

They also drew the attention to the management for its laxity towards concerns and inadequacies of the company raised by clients, which has sent some of these clients away.Recently, clients using the company, have attacked CAMAIR-Co, for cancelling flights without informing them. CAMAIR-Co recently had a forced landing in Garoua, North region, which placed the company at the centre of nationwide criticism.

The National Union of Air Transport Workers, regrets that despite countless meetings with the management, it all resulted to no concrete actions.
