The Human Rights Council Working Group has made powerful recommendations, calling on the Government of Cameroon to grant the International Committee of the Red Cross access to Sessekou Ayuk Tabe and Co
The recommendations were made in Geneva, Switzerland during the 30th session of the group.
The Working Group after examining Cameroon’s report also requested the Government to initiate a multi-stakeholder dialogue with the various stakeholders in Anglophone Cameroon, investigate all cases of disappearances of political opposition representatives including Anglophone minority, and adopt legislation to protect human rights defenders and journalists.
The Post Newspaper reports that the review of Cameroon was held on mid May with a delegation led by Lejeune Mbella Mbella, Minister of External Relations.
The Human Rights Council had on January 10, 2018, selected some repporteurs to facilitate review of Cameroon and other countries , it is after their review that the UNHRC granted the International Committee of the Red Cross and other reputable bodies access to Anglophone Separatist leaders extradited from Nigeria and detained incommunicado since January.
Cameroon was told to respect rights of peaceful assembly, and freedoms of association and expression, including when exercised online and afford all of those detained all the rights enshrined in Cameroon’s constitution and under international law.
Double efforts on improving and effectively implement the bilingualism policy to ensure that English speaking population does not suffer from discrimination.
The report is the latest in a series of worries raised by Lawyers of Anglophone Separatist leaders arrested. Human Rights Lawyers and Activists have also hit hard on the government for failing to give access to teh detained.
Instead a recent outing by Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji, revealed that those arrested are well fed and have even gained weight.
