About four weeks to senatorial elections, a decision from elections management body signed Thursday March 14 by the Director General of elections, Mohaman Sani Tanimou, stipulates the terms for publication of campaign posters.
The decision states that the maximum size of campaign posters shall be 600 x 400 centimeters and the posters of each political party shall be printed at the said party’s expense, on paper of the same colour as that chosen for the printing of ballot and campaign posters.

In compliance with the provisions of section 89 of the law relating to the Electoral Code, publication of campaign posters and manifestoes shall be subject to the prior endorsement of Regional Delegate of Elections responsible for the constituency concerned, the decision reads.

Interestingly enough, the release says the endorsement stated above shall be withheld where a document is tantamount to call to violence, undermines national territorial integrity, the Republican form of the State, State sovereignty, national unity or incites hatred against a State official, a citizen or a body of citizens.

As such, any manifesto or poster published in contravention of the legal provisions shall, at the instance of the Regional Delegate of Elecam concern, seized without prejudice to such criminal prosecution as may be instituted against the authors of such documents or the misdemeanors thereof.

Section 6(2) of the decision mandates chairpersons of local polling commission to personally ensure that campaign ballots, articles and electoral advertising objects do not circulate on Election Day and also to prohibit the wearing of the uniform or accessories of a political party inside polling station.
