Speaking to The Post in his office in Buea, Wednesday, July 28,the Commissioner of Police of Buea, Boubakary Tahirou, admitted that the computerised identification card centre was actually sealed by the Delegate General for National Security, but would not disclose the reasons. He said he could only talk to the press if his hierarchy permits him. “At this juncture, what I can tell you is for you to contact hierarchy, because we don’t just give out information to the press when investigations are still going on,” said Commissioner Tahirou.
The inhabitants of Buea, The Post learnt, welcomed Minlo Medjo’s decision, witch they described as a wonderful move to fight corruption. In a chat with The Post, Francis Amabo, a mechanic by profession, said in order to establish a computerised identity card in Buea, h. paid FCFA 5000 to the police, whereas elsewhere, the official amount was FCFA 2500, as stipulated by the law.
According to Charles Luma, a trader in Buea market, the decision to suspend activities at the identification centre is welcomed, “... but our worry now is what will happen to those of us who already paid FCFA, 5000 [but5 did not collect our cards] before the centre was sealed? This is because the very police will start harassing us for not possessing the new identity cards,” Luma averred.
Limbe Council Donates Bus To Police
Meanwhile, Minlo Medjo, who was in Limbe to receive a 14 seater bus offered by the Limbe Urban Council, LUC, has warned that any member of the police force who will demonstrate overzealousness in the discharge of their duties would be dismissed.
The bus, according to the Government Delegate of LUC, Samuel Ebiama Lifanda, was donated to assist the police in maintaining peace and security in the municipality. Minlo told his elements serving in Limbe that they will be held responsible for any security lapses. He said, with the bus, which shall help in carrying out routine patrols, they are expected to yield positive results.
Minlo congratulated the Government Delegate for the gesture and his spirit of cooperation with the police. According to him, this was an unprecedented example and one worthy of emulation by other municipalities.
Lifanda said the gesture was in line with the tradition of the LUC, which has always cooperated wit the public security in maintaining peace in the municipality. He said he was also in line with President Biya’s policy of peace and security in the country.
Lifanda told The Post that Limbe is a touristic and fast evolving business community and that when tourists and business personalities come into town, “they should do their business and enjoy our touristic richness in peace and tranquillity.”
New Police Posts
The national police boss approved the opening of three new police posts in Limbe.
Minlo, in the. company of the Commissioner of Police in Limbe, Maurice Sanam Demande, other top ranking police officials, and other dignitaries, visited the sites where the police, posts shall be located: at the Mile Four Motor Park in Limbe, Batoke and New Town quarters in Limbe.
Minlo promised that 100 new police officers will soon be posted to the Southwest Province to reinforce the police force here. He equally promised to allocate two new police vans for the Southwest and one of them shall be for Limbe. Limbe, he said, will equally have two surveillance police boats.
Commissioner Appreciates Gift
the Limbe Police Commissioner appreciated the gift from the Council saying: “It is going to facilitate and quicken response to the needs of the now, especially in meeting emergency calls.” Commissioner Sanam described the number of the police force in Limbe for now as “very insufficient.” He said the new police posts would yield positive results
Shooting of Taximan
A source within the Fako Administration revealed that Minlo’s visit was connected to the shooting of a Buea based taximan, Felix Nyong Nkwelle, a week ago in Mile For, Limbe, by a Police Inspector, Joseph Beinim, of the Limbe Public Security. He said before the visit, Minlo ordered the transfer of Beinim to Buea where he will be court marshalled.
Meantime, the Commissioner of Public Security, Limbe, refuted this assertion. He said Minlo’s visit lad nothing to do with the shooting incident.
