Vincent Aboubakar came off the bench and completely changed Cameroon's fortunes and football fans believe his World Cup contribution needs to be recognised with trophies

Fans want Cameroon ace Vincent Aboubakar to be awarded the goal of the tournament following his audacious strike at the World Cup.

The former Porto and Besiktas ace was brought off the bench by the Indomitable Lions when they were trailing an efficient Serbia side 3-1. At the time, Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has just swept home his first goal of the tournament to put his side into what appeared to be an uncatchable lead.

However, Aboubakar spectacularly beat the offside trap, latched onto a perfect pass and then calmly scooped a wonderful effort over the top of stranded Serbia goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. And World Cup fans believe he should already be handed the goal of the tournament.

“Aboubakar with the goal of the tournament,” one fan said on Twitter. “That Aboubakar goal might just be goal of the tournament,” another fan enthusiastically wrote on social media.

“Aboubakar with one of the best performances by an individual player in this World Cup. And this game is probably the best so far in the tournament,” said one other supporter.

Many other fans, even those neutral to Cameroon, also claimed he has already netted the best strike, saying: “At the mo...are we saying that chip from Aboubakar is goal of the tournament?”

If that was not good enough, he instantly beat the Serbia offside trap again for Cameroon’s third goal. However, instead of bearing down on goal, he played a perfectly weighted pass to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who made no mistake with the finish.

The African giants ideally need a victory if they are to stay in the tournament. They were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Switzerland in their opening group match and will have to face Brazil in their final fixture.

However, with Aboubakar in this kind of form, who is to say what Cameroon can and cannot achieve?
