The leader of the group of parliamentarians of the Social Democratic Front (SDF) at the National Assembly, Hon Banadzem Joseph Lukong has described the conditions under which some youths arrested in the wake of the crisis rocking the North West and South West regions and detained at the Kondengui central prison in Yaounde as “extremely delicate and worrying.”

The opposition Member of Parliament who visited the detainees recently has called for their immediate and unconditional release.

“I found them in an extremely delicate and worrying situation. There is a young man there who came in from the U.S.A with other members of his family. When he went out to buy something he was arrested. He is now in prison whereas his other brothers and sisters have gone back to the U.S,” the MP explained to Equinoxe TV demanding that the youths should be released.

“They should be released whatever the situation. We are living in a democratic society and demonstrations are normal democratic indicators in any lively society,” Hon Banadzem stated saying people shouldn’t be detained for carrying out a demonstration.

“The authorities should release them for a good will gesture so that negotiations can start and for the country to move as it ought to move,” the opposition SDF MP urged.

Some 38 people are currently held at the detention facility in relation to the protests.

Hon Banadzem’s visit was the third by SDF MPs to inmates of the maximum security prison detained in relation to what is now commonly referred to as “the Anglophone problem.”
