As the Indomitable Lions prepare for the Nations Cup next year, where they will be defending their African title, first choice international, Geremi Njitap says with all due respect to opponents, none will prevent them from winning CAN 2004...
In this interview with Martin Etonge in Lyon, France, the football reassures fans that their preparation programme was sufficient and that he was enjoying playing for English Premiership side, Chelsea. Excerpt How are you settling in Chelsea? Every thing is OK now. It was difficult in the beginning because we were still struggling to be a team. Most of us were new players. We have built one and positive results have started coming. I think we are now doing well. We are winning some games. That’s what is important. You are also very happy to be a regular? Of course, as a footballer, I always want to play every Saturday. I’m in Chelsea with big stars, so I really have to work hard to merit a first team place. That is what I strive to do every day. Cameroon is going for their fifth African Nations Cup title. Is that possible next year? It’s not going to be easy. You know it is has become a very big challenge to other nations when they face Cameroon in a football match. That challenge will be very stiff next year. But we are sure to hold our game and let them come on to us. We’ll fight hard too to keep the title. You think your preparation is proper? Our preparation plan is fine with me. We get together at least once every month for training sessions. That is good enough to build team spirit. We cannot get more than this because the programme in Europe where all of us play is very tight and we need to foolw the unified international calendar. Egypt, Algeria and Zimbabwe are up against Cameroon in the first round of the Nations Cup. Don’t they frighten you? Well, once you have qualified for the Nations Cup finals, then you are strong enough to beat any team in the world. You can no more be underestimated. However, with all due respect for our opponents, we think they don’t have sufficient talents to stand us and they can’t prevent us from taking the title in CAN 2004. We have the will to win. It’s going to be difficult, but We are sure to win.
