Improvised Explosive Device diffused in Kumba Facebook
An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was diffused by security forces in the city of Kumba, at a newspaper kiosk located at the Buea-Road neighborhood.
Locals discovered the suspicious device attached to an electric meter Thursday, January 7, 2021, near the Kumba Press Center. Those who found the object informed Defense and Security Forces.
Wilson Elong Njume Njikang, Commissioner of the Kumba Central Police Station in charge of public security led a police squad to the scene.
Ascertaining that the suspicious object was an Improvised Explosive Device, military specialists were called in from the 6th military battalion.
"The soldiers diffused the Improvised Explosive Device without causing any damage to life or property,” a local familiar with the story told Cameroon-Info.Net.
The incident created fear in locals around the area where the explosive had been found.
Ali Anogu, the subdivisional officer for Kumba I subdivision, and Chamberlain Ntou'ou Ndong, the senior divisional officer of Meme Division have hailed the local population for collaborating with defense and security forces in maintaining security in the city.
Authorities say armed separatists in the area must have placed the Improvised Explosive Device.
Thursday's discovery brings to two the number of improvised explosive devices diffused by security officers in Kumba. The first one was cleared last year at a filling station a few meters away from the Kumba Central Police Station.
This discovery comes a day after an improvised explosive device reportedly planted by separatist fighters in Momo, North West Region detonated, killing five persons, including four soldiers and the Momo Divisional Delegate for Communication, Mrs. Liwusi Rebecca Jeme.
Cameroon’s state forces have been battling to dislodge armed separatists who pitched their tents in the North West and South West Regions since Anglophone protests transformed into an armed conflict in 2017.
Corporate demands by Common Law Lawyers and Anglophone Teachers led to protests in November 2016. The street demonstrations later morphed into ongoing running gun battles between state forces and armed separatist fighters in the predominantly English-speaking regions, leading to untold destruction of human lives, their habitats, and livelihoods.
Tit-for-tat killings, kidnappings, arsons, maiming, and outright terror have become part of daily lives in some parts of the English-speaking regions.
