Households in Adamawa region will receive over 700,000 treated mosquito bed nets in June, as part of government's effort to combat Malaria.

A strategic meeting to plan the distribution exercise took place recently at the governor's office, where it was revealed that 763,972 treated nets will be handed over to 1,309,666 inhabitants in the area.

The Adamawa regional delegate for public health Dr. Zakari Yaou Alhadji, says they have already acquired a storage warehouse and are taking security measures especially in health districts as teams are already working to select stock keepers and distributors.

The coordinator of the malaria control unit for Adamawa said all communities and neighbourhoods will be reached as the target is to touch 100% households.

A mobile team will be installed in remote areas and distribution will be done at the homes of traditional rulers. Forces of law and order will be deployed around most distribution grounds.

Many of the denizens have been accused of using mosquito nets as their fishing nets. This has been discouraged by administrative authorities in the region, who are warning against such acts.

Malaria kills at least 4000 persons each year in Cameroon. Government has implored the use of mosquito nets as a preventive measure on its population. In 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria in 87 countries. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 435 000 in 2017.

The World Health Organisation, WHO African Region, carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2017, the region was home to 92% of malaria cases and 93% of malaria deaths. The total funding for malaria control and elimination reached an estimated US$ 3.1 billion in 2017. Contributions from governments of endemic countries amounted to US$ 900 million, representing 28% of total funding.
