Cameroon – Yaoundé: ICT University graduates 6th batch of 300 students; Obasanjo hails quality of training

The Information and Communication Technology, ICT University has sent 300 successful graduates to new careers and the development of innovative solutions for some of society’s emergent challenges.

The 6th graduation ceremony of the ICT University took place at the Yaoundé Conference Center Saturday, July 31, 2021, in the presence of Nigeria's erstwhile leader, Chief Professor Olusegun Obasanjo, Cameroon's Higher Education Minister, Minister of State Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng, Secondary Education Minister Professor Nalova Lyonga of and former Prime Minister Philemon Yang.

As 300 students, including 13 PhDs, drawn from countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, graduated from the ICT University, they were urged to be solution providers to contemporary societal challenges.

Obasanjo hailed the quality of training offered at ICT University.

In his keynote address, Professor Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria's military leader from 1976 to 1979 and later as the country's democratically elected president from 1999 to 2007, said the ICT University is a reference not only in Africa but beyond.

In his capacity as Guest Speaker at the graduation ceremony, Obasanjo said before long, the ICT University will be in the list of top ten universities in the world of ICT.

“I foresee you emerging in the coming months and years, in the new list of valuable players in driving the wheels of this great nation and amongst the architects. If we sustain this your current level of quality, I also foresee this University in no distant future in the list of top ten universities in the world of ICT, ”said Obasanjo.

Obasanjo used his discourse titled 'The hidden processor for success beyond ICT knowledge and skills', to hail ICT University founder, Professor Victor Mbarika for making good and wise investments.

 Hear him: “… you are making good and wise investments. You are investing in the graduating students and all the other students that are in this institution. You are investing in their development, you are investing in their today for their family, and you are investing in them for the benefit of their community today and tomorrow. ”

To the graduating students, President Obasanjo said he is “highly impressed from what I have heard and from what I have seen”.

He thanked the ICT University for the honor of inviting him and for conferring on him the title of 'distinguished visiting professor of the ICT University'.

“I assure you that this is a responsibility that I take seriously. And as I assured you yesterday, I will not take this responsibility lightly… I will make sure that I'm able to give lectures for a year, or if possible two, ”said Obasanjo.

Earlier on, the founder and current president of the Board of Trustees of the ICT University, United States-based renowned Cameroonian Professor, Victor Mbarika, described Chief Professor Olusegun Obasanjo as a distinguished statesman, intellectual, educator and a peacemaker.

While justifying the choice of Obasanjo as Guest Speaker, Prof. Mbarika said a keen look at the history of Chief Obasanjo can provide one with content for a book on one of Africa's foremost sons who has shaped the political, economic, social, and cultural landscape of the continent for over five decades.

He said Obasanjo's political life has inspired modern-day politicians and scholars across Africa in general and Nigeria in particular. Obasanjo's brand of political ideology, Professor Mbarika continued, is that of peace, unity, and development of the African continent.

In his closing address at Saturday's graduation ceremony, Cameroon's Minister of Higher Education, Minister of State Professor Jacques Fame Ndongo described President Obasanjo as a friend indeed to Cameroon and President Paul Biya.

He said Obasanjo's role in bringing to an end the border dispute over the Bakassi Peninsula was exemplary and speaks volumes of his commitment as a peacemaker.

“Allow me to express my very profound gratitude to… Obasanjo for the wonderful discourse delivered,” Fame Ndongo concluded.
