The leading brewery company in Cameroon, Brasseries of Cameroon has released communiqués, announcing a 50frs price increase on most of their alcoholic drinks, making a bottle of Export or Booster that used to cost FCFA 600, to be now sold at FCFA 650.

Exceptions are for Beaufort and Pelforth, whereby the prices have been maintained. Consumers haven’t welcomed this news, following an earlier declaration by government officials there will be no increment this year. January, the Minister of Trade Luc Magloire Mbarga Atanagana dismissed fears of an increases in beer prices as well as basic commodities in Cameroon this year. The minister reacted to rumours that beer prices had gone up by 15frs increase. A meeting called by the minister with brewery companies same month arrived at the decision, not to step up prices.

This decision however was just to cold down tempers at the time , since the hike in beer prices has not only gone up by 15 FCFA, but by 50 FCFA

The increase comes as a result of the 2019 Finance Act, which lays out new tax measures relating to the calculation of excise duties. The financial impact duties, combined with other taxes such as VAT( 19.25%) and the 2.2% withholding tax have an average total impact. With this burden, the Cameroon Alcohol Producers Association (CAPA), sent an open letter to the minister of Finance, stating that in order to guarantee financial balance to producers, an average increase of 100FRS to 150FRS per bottle should be implemented

This decision doesn’t really affect those in the war torn areas of the country, as most beer products had only gone up to at least 100frs. Some of the products like that of Brasseries are now being smuggled to an area that a group of persons have declared it outlaw.
